Streaming Shows We Love and You Will, Too

Technology
pointing remote to TV

It’s the summer and typically that means the TV doldrums. Television becomes the wasteland of reruns or the testing ground of iffy shows. If you need to spend time inside because you are recovering from an illness or surgery, have limited mobility, or simply prefer to stay out of the sun and heat, no need to despair. Thanks to on-demand viewing and streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu and HBO Go, you can be entertained and enthralled through Labor Day. And best of all, you can tune into them anytime you like – day or night.

Streaming shows have come a long way since reruns debuted on Hulu – the originator of streaming. Today’s shows boast high-end production, big name directors, and even bigger stars. There’s a show for every taste – comedy, thriller, action, intellect.

If you are new to streaming, your personal care aide can help set up your account. Then, when it’s time to watch (remember these shows are on-demand so you decide when you want to watch!), your caregiver can comfortably position your laptop or tablet, or connect your device to your TV for large screen viewing.

Don’t know where to start in finding a show to stream or want to expand your list of shows? Look no further. Here’s a list of some of our favorite streaming shows, vetted by our Privatus team.

For the food lover

Who doesn’t adore traveling the globe in search of exquisite food. The Netflix original series Chef’s Table spends an hour per episode profiling the world’s top chefs. And for a dose of humor and the outrageous, nothing beats Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown on CNN. Bourdain’s deadpan humor in covering the unusual as well as the ultimate in traditional foods is unparalleled. Bourdain will be dearly missed.

For the fantasy history lover

HBO Go’s medieval fantasy epic Game of Thrones is intense in every respect – the storylines, the gore, the sex. One thing is for sure, you won’t be bored. The show has become a phenomenon into itself. Watch and see why.

For the fantasy futurist

Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, was a runaway bestseller. Now, it’s a runaway hit on Hulu. For some, there’s eerie prescient themes that are all too resonant of today’s headlines. Simply riveting!

For the Anglophile

Netflix brings a behind-the-scenes look at what it is to be Queen Elizabeth II in this lavish production of The Crown. For those who were glued to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the evolution of the royal family will be astounding.

For the comedy lover

Return to the late 1950’s and settle in for some good laughs with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Video. This comedy-drama series about a female stand-up comic is refreshing and a tribute to the heyday of Joan Rivers.

For the mystery lover, 80’s

Netflix’s original series, Stranger Things, bills itself as an homage to “E.T., The Extraterrestrial, Stephen King, and the sci-fi and horror classics of the 80’s.” Buckle up for a wide ride.

For the mystery lover who likes to laugh

The Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning Big Little Lies can be seen on HBO Go. And so can the stellar cast of Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz.

For the political junkie

Though it’s been on production hiatus and had to be a little retooled, nothing compares to House of Cards on Netflix. It’s outrageous, but hones closely to today’s Washington scene. The final season premieres this fall, so you have plenty of time to catch up.

For the crime junkie

Gritty, raw, engrossing. Narcos from Netflix grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. The series chronicles the Columbian drug trade in the 80’s and takes the viewer on a rollercoaster journey.

For the espionage lover

Undercover agents. The KGB. The Cold War. Catch The Americans on Amazon Prime (also on the FX Networks). Fans call it profound, redefining, must-see TV.

At Privatus, we are always on the look-out for ways to bring enjoyment, entertainment, and the interesting into our clients’ lives. We hope you enjoy these streaming selections and the summer. Got a favorite show? Please share with us!
